Reply with quote | #1 | Hi there! We give Petey crab apple twigs/leaves on a daily basis, and this particular summer we've had a bad problem with Japanese beetles. I notice a lot of the leaves on the tree have chewed spots from the beetles. Is there any danger of Petey eating leaves that the beetles have laid their eggs on or chewed on?
Thanks a lot. |

If you don't want bugs in your house, you might put the twigs in a plastic bag and freeze them before giving them to Petey. That should kill any bugs or larvae on the twigs. I also freeze my birdseed to keep moths from hatching out, as sometimes happens if the seed sits around for awhile. |

Reply with quote | #5 | Thanks for your post! All of the crab apple leaves I give to Petey are actually frozen before he gets them. That is the one thing I was hoping would help kill off any problems with larvae or bugs. I try to freeze a whole bunch for the winter too so he can have a bunch over winter, but I always seem to run out by Christmas! Must be time to get a bigger freezer, huh?
Good to hear from you again! |
